The Right Thing

Nina had one hand over her mouth. This was the spot, she realized. Iain was sitting in the same place where he’d mourned the loss of his marriage, of his future. How hard must this week have been for him?

“Oh, no,” she breathed. So many raw feelings today, and this one had tipped her straight over the edge. “Oh, no. Iain. I’m so sorry.”

He turned his head and looked at her, his eyes so bleak, and she couldn’t help it. She moved into him, put her hands around his head, pulled it down to hers, and pressed her lips to his hard mouth.

She’d only meant to comfort, or that’s what she’d told herself. She’d wanted to kiss the hurt away, to do something to ease his pain. But from the minute her lips touched his, it became something else. His mouth settled over hers, and just like that, her lips were parting. He deepened the kiss as if he couldn’t help it, either, as if it were rushing on him the same way it was on her. One of his hands was in her hair, wrapped around the back of her head, while the other went around her waist and pulled her in, and she heard a faint noise coming from deep inside her throat. She’d never made that sound, but she was making it now. She was whimpering.

“Oh, hell, Nina,” he groaned, and he was drawing her into his lap. The thrill of it, of his solid thighs under her bare legs, of all that firm chest under her palms, tried to take her breath away. Then he was back at her mouth, taking it hard, stealing her breath for real, and her hands were on his shoulders, hanging on.

“This,” he said. “Oh, yeh. I need this.” His mouth moved across her cheek, over to her ear, making her shiver. His lips were at her neck now, taking sips and little nibbles at her, and she was gasping, starting to squirm, the fire licking its way down her body.

She wasn’t cold anymore. She was burning up.

“You like that?” he murmured. “Want some more?”

“Yes,” she sighed. “Oh, yes.”

She could feel the curve of his lips against her skin as he smiled, and then his mouth was moving again, lips and tongue and teeth, teasing and taking. One hand still held her head in place, and the possessiveness of it thrilled her, however much it shouldn’t. He held her like she was his, but like she was precious, too. And then she forgot to think about that. His other hand was stroking up from her waist, drifting higher, over her ribs, touching her through the thin cotton of her shirt, making her wriggle against him.

“Ticklish,” she managed.

“Hmm,” was all the response she got. His mouth continued its work on her neck, lighting her up, making her burn. He wasn’t tickling anymore, either. His hand was sure and strong, blazing a path higher, under her sweater, tracing around the edges of the skinny-ribbed tank, until he finally settled that big palm over her breast.
